The Hospital Advantage

No matter the type of healthcare you wish to practice or the communities you hope to serve, hospital experience is beneficial to a diversified, well-rounded medical education. In the U.S., hospitals provide different forms of care than other countries, which makes hospital exposure an important part of learning the U.S. healthcare system.

Hospital clinical experiences offer:

  • Both inpatient and outpatient opportunities
  • The chance to earn letters of recommendation on hospital letterhead
  • Opportunities to rotate alongside current residents

"The doctor is one of the most skilled surgeons I have ever met and an incredibly extraordinary mentor. His approachability, availability (despite his already hectic schedule as one of the medical directors), and ability to listen is beyond what I could ever ask for in a mentor. The program really helped me cement my decision to go for the specialty I want, and it allowed me to gain confidence in my skills and medical knowledge. Overall, a great experience.

"During my clinical rotation I was able to present patient cases, examine them and also learn and practice several procedures. We were instructed on how to intubate, how to do ultrasound for central catheter insertion, and we did IV catheter placement. We took care of patients in the ICU, acute care and general hospitalization. My preceptors were attentive, knowledgeable, and they had vocation."

Understanding the U.S. Healthcare System

Hospital systems are large networks of care and health resources that include and extend beyond the hospital, including clinics, nursing homes, or labs affiliated with the hospital.

Rotating in the U.S. often provides exposure to one or more medical settings, including in-patient and outpatient care.

In-Patient Rotations

Option 2 hospital site icon
In-patient care is care provided to patients admitted to a hospital or facility for an extended period. In-patient exposure during rotations is typically shadowing only, even if the rotation is hands-on.

Outpatient Rotations

Option 1 rotating doctors icon
Outpatient care is care provided to patients who do not need admission to a hospital or facility. Outpatient care is most often provided at clinics or urgent care centers, but hospitals do also provide outpatient appointments in some cases.
